• Site Energy Management Control System (EMCS)

These operation and maintenance activities are performed in a manner to ensure they are always safe, reliable, efficient, and mission ready. The EU Division oversees BNL's energy management programs including conservation and obtaining economical electric power and fuel supplies for BNL.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Energy & Utilities Division, within the Facilities and Operations Directorate has an opportunity to fill the position of Site Shift Supervisor (SSS), which is anchored at Building 452 and reports directly to the Energy & Utilities Division Manager. The Site Shift Supervisor is a first-line supervisor who is assigned a non-day rotating shift four days off/four days on, including weekends, holidays, and weather event lab closures. This position includes a 15% shift differential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the oversight of all Energy and Utilities operations personnel to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all plants and utilities during non-standard hours.
- Conduct scheduled inspections (rounds) of utility plants, mechanical equipment rooms, air handling units (AHUs), and key infrastructure to monitor performance and ensure compliance with operational standards.
- Serve as the lead responder to system alarms, critical failures, and abnormal conditions associated with: Utility plant equipment (boilers, chillers, pumps, etc.), building automation and control Systems, site-wide HVAC systems, and air handlers.
- Initiate appropriate corrective actions during equipment failures, water main breaks, sanitary sewer blockages, or electrical outages, and coordinate escalation to the responsible Utility Supervisor or Energy & Utilities Manager.
- Manage after-hours emergency call-ins (ECIs) for bargaining unit personnel, maintain accurate call-out documentation, and coordinate labor responses with the Facility Operations Center (FOC).
- Direct and assign tasks to all utility plant personnel; oversee on-shift operations, provide technical guidance, and facilitate on-the-job training to ensure staff competency and safety.
- Act as the primary point of contact for Laboratory Protection personnel during emergencies, outages, and site events requiring utility support.
- Lead emergency response efforts, including execution of utility shutdown protocols and site safety measures in accordance with established procedures (e.g., confined space entry, lock-out/tag-out).
- Acts as primary contact with Staff Services personnel for all BNL employees, guests, and on-site residents.
- Oversee the repair or maintenance of equipment in a safe and conscientious manner following safety rules, procedures, such as confined space, lock-out/tag-out, etc.
- Maintain and update electronic and hardcopy operational logs, shift reports, and inspection records in compliance with site protocols and regulatory standards.
- Create, manage, and track maintenance and repair tasks using the Maximo Work Order Management System.
- Support all utility plant supervisors in executing preventative and corrective maintenance tasks to maintain optimal plant performance and system reliability.
- Assist with routine and scheduled maintenance activities across Energy & Utilities assets on daily, weekly, monthly, and annual intervals.
- Promote and enforce high standards of housekeeping, tool and equipment management, and inventory control within all utility facilities.
- Provide technical and operational support to the Energy & Utilities Manager on special assignments, system upgrades, and infrastructure improvement projects.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in facilities operations, maintenance, or construction trades with demonstrated expertise in utility plant systems, infrastructure support, or large-scale building mechanical operations.
- Proven experience in supervising, coordinating, and scheduling technical staff, including the assignment of work orders, development of shift coverage plans, and real-time adjustment to operational demands.
- Hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of critical utility systems, including but not limited to: chillers and chilled water distribution systems, cooling towers and condenser water loops, air handling units (AHUs), ventilation systems, steam and hot water boilers, centrifugal pumps, air compressors and compressed air systems, building electrical distribution systems (low and medium voltage), water treatment and distribution systems, automated control and monitoring systems.
- Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems, preferably IBM Maximo, for managing work orders, preventive maintenance tasks, and asset tracking.
- Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across various organizational levels including technical trades personnel, facility users, and management teams.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and underground utility maps to support system diagnostics and emergency response planning.
- Flexibility to work non-standard shifts, including weekends and holidays, and to respond to unplanned events or emergencies (e.g., weather-related closures, utility failures).
- Must occasionally attend daytime training, safety meetings, or medical evaluations as required by site policy.
- Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License is required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code.
- EPA 608 Universal HVAC technician Certification.
- Experience working in a collective bargaining union environment.
Environmental, Safety, and Health, Considerations:
- Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights up to 20 feet.
- Work outdoors/cold environments.
- Work in warm environments.
- Ability to act as a primary authorized employee for Lock-out/Tag-out.
- Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
- Domestic travel may be required on occasion for training purposes.
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $97850 - $151650 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
