Silicon Strip Detector Production Manager

Job ID 1852 Date posted 08/19/2019

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The Omega Group at BNL has an opening for a Scientific Associate II experienced with silicon strip detector technology, data acquisition, testing, and production. The successful candidate will also support ongoing activities on silicon detector R&D towards tracking detectors for future experiments.

  • Production floor manager for building a silicon strip detector
  • Support for data acquisition and quality control
  • R&D towards future silicon detectors

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, or in a closely related field.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant post-bachelor’s experience.
  • Proven experience supervising and scheduling technical work.
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and software for silicon strip detectors.
  • Familiarity with automated wire bonding.
  • Ability to work in a large international collaboration.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with automated wire bonding.
  • Experience writing software in C/C++, Python, Java, or other high-level languages.
  • Experience with data analysis and knowledge of statistical techniques for data analysis.
  • Experience in detector performance or trigger systems for particle or nuclear physics experiments.
  • Expertise with instrumentation control software development, data acquisition, and data analysis based on C/C++ and Python.
  • Hands-on problem-solving skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • The position is for an initial two-year term with the possibility of an extension.
  • Domestic and international travel should be expected.

Candidates seeking to apply must submit an electronic application to this opening. Please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to physicsLOR@bnl.gov with a subject line referring to this job posting (Req# 1852).
