EBNN Research Operations provides Operational and Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) support for EBNN and work with Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Center for Multiscale Applied Sensing (CMAS). CMAS is a multi-disciplinary center that focuses on acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting measurements from networks of sensors in highly heterogeneous areas, including complex urban and coastal locations. The CMAS Team aims to solve modern challenges: 1- environmental justice, 2- national security concerns related to urban atmospheric transport, and 3- renewable energy generation. You will also be assigned to support a diverse variety of tasks undertaken by the Research Operations Group.
This exciting opportunity will put you to work with the Work Control Supervisor/Electrical Safety Advisor and the ESH Manager in Research Ops to ensure that operations run safely and smoothly across the four departments it serves as well as the Science Team of the Center for Multiscale Applied Sensing in the Department of Environmental and Climate Sciences towards fulfilling the Center’s scientific mission.
For CMAS you will be responsible for providing operational support such as repairing equipment, assisting staff, and participating in scheduled field work both onsite and offsite and be expected to act as a Work Control Coordinator and Research Space Manager for EBNN and Field Campaign Coordinator for CMAS. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Act as a Research Space Manager for a large scientific building within EBNN.
Assemble standard operating procedures for scientific research equipment that are in the scope of the Research Ops and CMAS Groups.
Install, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair scientific research equipment that are in the scope of the Research Ops and CMAS Groups.
Assist the CMAS Group with the planning of field experiments. This includes i) conducting market research and procuring field work supplies following established procedures, ii) arranging for material shipping to the field site following established procedures, iii) identifying proper field deployment locations, and iv) acquiring necessary permits.
Participate in field work and ongoing operations. Drive the CMAS mobile laboratory trucks, perform field rounds to check and maintain equipment, and help researchers with day-to-day operations.
Setup data transfer protocols and organize data in a database and online repositories.
Work to maintain BNLs policies and practices for the safe conduct of research by completing all required safety and compliance training, participating in work and safety planning, following procedures and work plans, wearing appropriate PPE, and maintaining safe work areas.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience or
a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years experience or
a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or
8 years relevant work experience.
Ability to read and carry out instructions from a manual and onsite leadership
Good mechanical skills: the ability to work with basic hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools
Ability to perform web-based market research and summarize findings for consideration by others
Ability to understand instrument specifications such as power requirements, size, and weight
Experience with reading and identifying material type, size, and rating on components.
Clear and concise verbal and written communication and presentation skills
Effective organizational skills and time management skills
Basic computer programing skills and experience with using Microsoft Office products.
Must have a valid NYS Driver’s license
Ability to drive a truck for long durations (up to 8 hrs. per day)
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A high school diploma or equivalent plus:
a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or
a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or
a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or
10 years relevant work experience.
Experience with Work Planning and Control
Experience with interacting with dataloggers, databases, servers and other such means of organizing observational data
Field deployment experience
Working knowledge of safety codes and standards related to mechanical and electrical work
Experience with installing, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting meteorological and climate sensing equipment (e.g., radar, lidar, microwave radiometer, rain gauge, air quality sensor, and weather stations).
Experience with the analysis of weather and climate data
Experience and training with operating a fork-lift
Drone pilot skills or the ability to successfullyacquire requisite training
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Individual will be required to:
Be able to wear standard Personnel Protection Equipment
Climb ladders and may work in Confined Spaces
Occasionally work off-hours, nights, or weekends to support troubleshooting and repair of mission-critical systems and participate in field work.
Ability to be able to travel long distances via airplane or otherwise
Ability to work in inclement weather (heat)
Ability to lift objects of at least 50 lbs., following established safety protocols

This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $79200 - $98000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
