Radioactive Hazmat Shipper

Job Description

Responsible for work assignments for the Packaging and Transportation Group within the Waste Management Division. Provide technical expertise to department and divisions, and provide superior service to BNL in shipping radioactive materials. Ensure work carried out complies with U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations (DOT) International Air Transport Association Regulations (IATA), Standard Based Management System (SBMS) management systems, subject areas and other regulations, and Packaging and Transportation Group SOPs. Identify potential hazards, environmental concerns, and unsafe conditions or practices in work or at work site and implement or suggest controls to minimize risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under minimum direction, plans, and coordinates projects by providing imaginative, thorough, and practicable solutions and performs complex and difficult professional level assignments in a broad technical field. Assignments are usually on a project basis, in such areas as design, development, construction or testing of specialized technical equipment, apparatus or facilities. May direct and coordinate the work efforts of other technical support personnel assigned to a specific project.

  • Provide technical expertise to departments and divisions and provide superior service to BNL in shipping radioactive materials.

  • Perform packaging of radioactive materials for shipping and receive radioactive materials from off-site sources.

  • Review shipping memo requests issued through the PeopleSoft system for all shipments from BNL.

  • Assist in the preparation of work control documentation, technical work documents, job safety analysis, and radiological work permit requests as necessary to ensure that adequate work controls are in place and adhered to for packaging and transportation activities.

  • Must be able to work under limited direction and as a team member under tight deadlines.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years relevant work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years relevant experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or;
- 8 years relevant work experience.

  • Knowledge and experience in hazardous materials and/or nuclear materials packaging and transportation.

  • Must have the ability to follow procedures and maintain all training and qualifications.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite; especially Outlook and Word.  

  • Requires material handling of up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 year relevant work experience or;
    - a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years relevant experience or;
    - 10 years relevant work experience or;
    - a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years relevant work experience.

  • Working knowledge of IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations and 49 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations).

  • The ability to use radiation detection and survey instruments.

  • The ability to communicate well in verbal and in written form.

This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $79200 - $100000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
