Research Physicist

The Cold QCD Group in the Physics Department has an opening for a scientist to join the ongoing efforts in the RHIC Cold QCD program. You will be expected to take a leading role in the activities of the group with responsibilities in the STAR collaboration and the RHIC polarimeters. We have recently collected significant data sets with polarized high-energy proton collisions and expect to continue to collect more in the RHIC Run-24 with a wide range of unique observables and possible analyses. In addition, you will have the opportunity to mentor and train students and postdocs in an international and multicultural environment, which will be growing from RHIC to EIC in the near future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participation in the RHIC cold QCD experimental program
  • Development and performance of analysis methods for experimental data
  • Presentation and publication of research results
  • Guidance and supervision of collaborating students and postdocs
  • Maintain a safe and respectful workplace environment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in nuclear or particle physics with at least 3 years of postgraduate related research experience
  • Experience of particle detector concepts, preferable Silicon detectors
  • Experience with programming languages and computing algorithms
  • Ability to lead a team and work in a large international collaboration
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with high energy hadron collider or fixed target experiments
  • Experience with deep inelastic scattering
  • Experience with physics event generator and detector simulations
  • Experience with hadron polarimetry techniques

  • Domestic and international travel can be expected
  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $101200 - $168000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
