Quantum Materials Scientist

Job ID 1511 Date posted 11/14/2018

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The CFN is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of more than 550 external facility users.  The CFN is a collaborative research environment, bringing together scientists with diverse expertise, including nanofabrication, electron microscopy, and theory & simulation.

Three strategic nanoscience themes underlie the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN fosters research on complex self-assembly processes, for building new ways of constructing Self-Assembled Nanomaterials by Design. The CFN supports state-of-the-art techniques for designing Nano-Architectures to improve the performance of materials. The CFN develops and provides advanced capabilities for studies of Nanomaterials in Operando Conditions, for characterizing materials and reactions at the atomic scale in real-world environments.

The CFN is seeking an exceptional Assistant Scientist to developa unique and impactful research program in the area of nanomaterials for Quantum Information Science; especially the study of synthesis and properties of heterostructures of two-dimensional materials. The CFN is building an advanced cluster tool that will exploit robotics and machine-learning to autonomously synthesize stacked two-dimensional nanomaterials. Your independent research program will leverage this capability and other CFN resources to study novel quantum materials. You will define a research program that explores the synthesis, characterization, and/or device properties of such heterostructures. Concurrently, you will develop a vibrant collaboration network, by supporting CFN users requiring the advanced materials synthesis and characterization methods that you will develop. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the development and support of specialized equipment, while playing a leadership role in defining a world-leading research program in quantum materials.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are qualified for this Assistant Scientist position if:

  • You have earned a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a suitable related discipline.

  • You have carried out at least two years of research or development after earning your Ph.D., for example as a postdoctoral researcher, research assistant, industrial scientist, or an equivalent position.

  • You have a strong background in nanomaterials research; especially two-dimensional and/or other quantum materials.

  • You have the leadership and research skills necessary to define and independently develop a prominent nanoscience research program.

  • You communicate effectively, both verbally and through writing.

  • You take ownership of the entire workflow of scientific research, from developing research plans, through experimental execution and data analysis, and finally to publication.

  • You have experience with operating and maintaining complex scientific instrumentation.

  • You collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams, in leadership and also supporting roles.

  • You are committed to working safely in the laboratory and fostering an environment of safe-work practices.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are well-matched to this position if:

  • You have extensive research experience in heterostructures of two-dimensional materials.

  • You have hands-on experience with the design, upgrading, and construction of integrated scientific research instrumentation.

  • You have some experience with scripting/programming in the context of scientific experiments.
