Quality Engineer

Job ID JR100945 Date posted 02/29/2024

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Planning, Performance and Quality Management Office (PPQM) provides an enterprise-level perspective on planning and performance and provides a focal point for Laboratory contractor assurance activities.  Within PPQM, the Quality Management Office (QMO) works with line organizations on developing and delivering programs, activities, and services that integrate quality assurance, environmental, and safety management principles throughout the Laboratory. Deployed Quality Representatives work closely with their assigned organizations to provide quality assurance functions tailored to the organization and serve as a liaison back to the QMO.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Quality Management Office (QMO) is seeking an energetic self-starter to join their team as a deployed Quality Representative.

As an engineer, you will apply standard quality assurance and quality control practices and techniques in specific aspects of design, procurement, manufacturing, test, and initial operations.  In this role, you will work with colleagues to support the implementation of quality assurance and quality control methods on projects and processes.  Activities include planning, performing, and documenting assessments of processes against requirements, supporting the implementation of corrective action plans, analyzing performance data, performing supplier reviews and selections and incoming inspections, managing calibration programs, and developing and reviewing procedures.

This position reports to the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Quality Assurance Manager, and directly supports the EIC Project.  Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the EIC, a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe.  The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.  It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

This position requires an on-site presence in Upton, NY.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the generation, implementation, and maintenance of QA systems and procedures, including design control, process control, control of nonconformance, calibration, and receiving inspection.

  • Specify and enforce supplier quality requirements, perform pre- and post-award evaluations and surveillance, and ensure corrective actions as needed.

  • Perform internal assessments of implementation of procedures and Quality Assurance Program requirements. This includes developing assessment criteria, assessing implementation of requirements, documenting results, preparing reports, performing follow-up, and tracking corrective actions.  In addition, provide support for external assessments and reviews of the project.

  • Perform independent verification of corrective action implementation resulting from internal and external assessments, event causal analyses, critiques, and surveillances.

  • Review/approval of technical documents (e.g., drawings, engineering change requests, statements of work, specifications, procedures, purchase requisitions) to ensure appropriate quality requirements have been addressed.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of equipment calibration program.

  • Occasional domestic or international travel may be required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or scientific discipline.

  • Minimum of seven (7) years progressively responsible related work is required; specifically implementing quality assurance and quality control systems and processes, in an engineering and manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge of and experience with engineering design and drawings and manufacturing processes.

  • Knowledge of and experience with procurement processes and interfacing with suppliers.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to provide high-quality reports and presentations.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively across organizational boundaries, with a diverse group of engineering, scientific, and technical staff.

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization, both individually as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Core skills include organizational and time management, ability to gather information and resourcefulness in resolving problems.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and Microsoft Visio.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree

  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible related work experience which demonstrates advanced capabilities and use of sophisticated engineering approaches.

  • Knowledge of or training in specific quality standards or skills (e.g., ISO 9001, NQA-1, ASQ Certifications, auditing).

  • Knowledge of software quality assurance.

  • Experience working in a project environment or other similar matrix organization.
