Project Engineer (part-time (60%); term-12 mos.)

Job ID JR101401 Date posted 09/05/2024

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The EIC seeks a Project Engineer to lead the effort to update and adjust the EIC Installation cost estimate. The Project Engineer will work with group leaders, engineers, and technicians to update Critical Decision-1 (CD-1) back-up spreadsheets in accordance with present planned EIC phase 1 scope, add in the scope items missing in the CD-1 efforts, and ensure supervision, safety oversight, and planning are included.  We seek a Project Engineer with accelerator systems knowledge, excellent project management and documentation skills to lead this effort.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gather CD-1 Installation P6 files cost estimate files and the associated back-up support cost estimates to use as a baseline for a new EIC cost estimate for accelerator system installation labor and then a new installation schedule.

  • Prepare installation cost estimate.

  • Move back-up support files into the new installation EIC cost spreadsheets.  This includes tasks lists and labor estimates by labor type aligning with the P6 labor types.

  • Identify Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) and EIC system leads and support staff.  Meet with them and guide them through the process of updating the estimates.

  • Gather the new spreadsheets, review with system leads, check for consistency, inclusion for planning, staff supervision, safety documentation, and installation documentation.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible related work experience including demonstrated abilities in engineering leadership.

  • Knowledge of particle accelerator systems, operations, and maintenance.

  • Demonstrated advanced and innovative engineering approaches and techniques to resolve highly complex and unique problems.

  • Advanced document organizational skills, and project and people management skills

  • Proficiency using MS excel, MS word, and MS power point.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in related discipline.

  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years progressively responsible related work experience including demonstrated outstanding abilities in engineering leadership, including at least five (5) years as an Engineer I or equivalent.

  • Experience or knowledge of MS Project or Primavera P6.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to complete BNL radiation worker training and CAD Access training to have access to the RHIC tunnel for inspection.

Other Information:

  • Part-time/60% position; 12-month term position

  • Work will be primarily on-site

  • Candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on breadth and depth of knowledge.
