Principal Electrical Controls Technician

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for an early-career Electronic Technician within the Controls Hardware Group. In this role, you will work on analog and digital VME control systems which communicate with network interfaces within the collider. Your responsibilities will include repairing Digital and Analog system to component level, conducting work in the field installing systems, cables, and fibers inside and outside of the collider.  You will advance to work on more complex systems as you gain experience and understanding of the Lab’s systems and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under minimum supervision, performs a variety of skilled technical functions typically involved with fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, evaluation, testing, troubleshooting and modification of Digital and Analog equipment

  • Troubleshoot digital and analog control systems down to component level

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

  • A technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 2 years of experience or;

  • A technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 3 years relevant work experience or;

  • 4 years relevant work experience

  • Requires a working knowledge of digital logic circuits, Analog circuits, soldering skills, and familiarity with electronic test equipment such as DVMs, oscilloscopes, and other common test equipment

  • Computer Skills with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word

  • The ability to work with basic hand tools

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with repair on surface mount PCBs

Employee Safety & Health Requirements:

  • Essential functions for this position; arm/hand dexterity, climb low to moderate heights, lift (up to) 30 lbs., good vision, mental sharpness, and alertness

  • Ability to work in a noisy environment with proper PPE

Other Information:

  • Visa sponsorship for this position is not available

  • Valid Driver’s license

  • Must be available to work overtime during nonscheduled hours to respond to C-AD operations as required

  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $62504 - $85550 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
