The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Access Control group in the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) has an opening for an experienced Electro/Mechanical or Mechanical Technician. As part of the Access Controls group, you will be responsible for the fabrication, assembling, installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and upgrading of the Access Control Systems located throughout the C-AD accelerator complex. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide high level technical service to analyze and solve complex system problems, such as Allen Bradley PLC’s, I/O power supplies, oxygen sensors, safety rated limit switches and relays
Fabricate equipment enclosures using various electrical components such as terminal blocks, power supplies, relays, and programmable logic controllers
Wire Electrical Panels to provided wiring diagrams
Conduct electrical tests and final commission tests on prototype electrical equipment
Coordinate work with other groups within the C-AD complex as required to complete tasks
Modify existing documentation and systems to maintain current records and ensure accuracy
Some off-hours work to provide for the certification and call-in repair of the Access Control Systems (ACS) when necessary
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
a BS degree in a technical field and tow (2) years work experience or;
a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification or AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus six (6) years of full-time relevant work experience or;
a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and seven (7) years relevant work experience or;
Eight (8) years relevant work experience
Must be able to interact and communicate well with a diverse group of engineers, physicists, and technicians
Experience with MS Office suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
Knowledge of low voltage electrical/electronic circuits, 120VAC to 24VDC
Knowledge of power supply setup, digital volt meters and digital current meters
Working knowledge of mechanical/electrical fabrication and wiring techniques, including metal cutting/fabrication, wire terminations
High degree of proficiency in the use of hand tools, such as soldering, test equipment such as digital voltage and current meters, oscilloscope, drilling
Ability to work from electrical drawings, schematics, and verbal instructions
Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
a BS degree in a technical field and four (4) years work experience or;
a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification or AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus eight (8) years of full-time relevant work experience or;
a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and nine (9) years relevant work experience or;
Ten (10) years relevant work experience
Diagnostic experience with PLC or relay-based logic systems
Cable installation field experience
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $79200 - $94133 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Arm and hand dexterity, ability to climb below various equipment and above moderate heights of up to 30ft on ladders
Ability to lift (up to) 30 lbs., good vision, ability to function in cool and warm temperature environments
Ability to work in a noisy environment with proper PPE

A valid US Drivers’ license is required
