Postdoctoral Research Associate – Novel Measurements of Self-assembly

Job ID 1693 Date posted 04/03/2019

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The CFN is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of nearly 600 external facility users.

Three strategic nanoscience themes underlie the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN creates new strategies for Nanomaterial Synthesis by Assembly, designing precise architectures with targeted functionality by organizing nanoscale components. The CFN devise and applies new platforms that Accelerate Nanomaterial Discovery, to achieve improved material performance and functionality. The CFN develops and utilizes advanced capabilities for studies of Nanomaterials in Operando Conditions for characterizing materials and reactions at the atomic scale in real-world environments.

The CFN is seeking an exceptional postdoctoral researcher to perform experimental studies of self-assembling thin film materials. This project is a collaboration between Brookhaven’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and Computational Science Initiative (CSI). In this project, the team is developing “autonomous experimentation”—machine-guided experimental control—and applying it to study of self-assembling block copolymer thin films. The team can benefit by adding a strong materials scientist to develop the experimental aspect of this project. In this role, you will study the fundamentals of self-assembly in block copolymer materials, develop new sample environments suitable for processing these materials during x-ray scattering measurements, and work with colleagues with expertise in machine-learning to fully automate experimental workflows. Your research will lead to advances both in understanding self-assembly (especially how non-equilibrium processing histories can be used to generate novel morphologies) and new autonomous experiment methods (especially thin film synthesis/processing platforms). In carrying out your project, you will be jointly mentored by Kevin Yager (CFN) and Masa Fukuto (NSLS-II).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are qualified for this postdoctoral position if:

  • You have earned a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a suitable related discipline within the past five years.

  • You have substantial experience preparing and characterizing thin film nanomaterials.

  • You have the ability to design and assemble customized scientific experiments.

  • You collaborate effectively with other scientists, while working independently within your broadly-defined research objective.

  • You participate meaningfully in scientific discussions, and the preparation of publications.

  • You are committed to working safely in the laboratory and fostering an environment of safe-work practices.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are particularly well-matched to this position if:

  • You have expertise in block copolymer thin film materials.

  • You have expertise with x-ray scattering measurement methods, such as SAXS/WAXS and GISAXS/GIWAXS.

  • You have previously fabricated custom sample environments for synthesizing and/or processing soft materials.

  • You have some experience with experimental automation and/or scientific software programming.

  • You communicate effectively, both verbally and through writing.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

At Brookhaven Lab, we believe comprehensive employee benefits are a meaningful part of employee compensation. Our benefits program includes:

• Medical Plans

• Vacations

• Holidays

• Dental Plans

• Life Insurance

• 401(k) Plan

• On site swimming pool, weight room tennis courts, and other employee benefits
