Catalysis: Reactivity and Structure Group focuses on the activation and conversion of CO2 and Methane at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the Chemistry Division led by Dr. Jose A. Rodriguez, Dr. Ping Liu and Dr. Sanjaya D. Senanayake
Candidate will be responsible to design and conduct experiments to elucidate kinetics and mechanism, utilizing the extensive resources at BNL for both standard and advanced in situ and operando catalysis characterization, including use of CFN and NSLS-II capabilities. Candidate will participate in studies focused on elucidation of the morphological, electronic and chemical properties of model and powder catalysts. The main objective of this project is to generate basic knowledge that can be used to explain and predict the behavior of catalysts used for the activation of methane (CH4) to produce syngas (CO/H2) and methanol (CH3OH).
Experimental work will involve the characterization of the model catalysts involving the use of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (EXAFS, XANES) coupled to in house spectroscopy (Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and Raman). Work will also be performed on the synthesis of well-defined powder catalysts, and some provided by outside collaborators.
There may also be surface science model work using conventional surface science techniques (Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Infrared Reflection and Absorbance Spectroscopy (IRRAS), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and new in situ tools (Ambient Pressure-XPS, -IRRAS).
- Due to the nature of the experiments, the candidate should have a Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering with extensive experience in synchrotron methods, surface science and catalysis studies.
- Proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is also required.
- Candidates must have good written and oral communication skills, be willing to take direction, and be able to work with others as part of a project team
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past 5 years.
