Organizational Overview

The mission of the Physics Department is to be involved in research using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).  The STAR Group in the Physics Department at BNL contributes to the overall STAR Experiment.  The STAR collaboration constructs and operates experimental apparatus for the STAR experiment located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and coordinates the production of scientific results using this apparatus.  The STAR group works with collaborators from around the world to share science data and shape the scientific program.

Position Description

The physics department is seeking a talented Scientific Associate to take an active role in the STAR Experiment. The successful candidate must be able to analyze, diagnose and resolve problems that arise within the STAR detector. The candidate will work independently by applying their knowledge to assist with the operation of a complex system of different detectors that are part of the STAR experiment.  The selected candidate will also assist in operating detectors and providing technical solutions to problems that may arise during the running of the STAR detector.  This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, and analyze high speed analog and digital electronics
  • The design of FPGA / CPLD based logic including functional and timing
  • Communicate effectively with scientist and staff outside of BNL 
  • Develop new electronics for upgrades to the STAR Experiment

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • BS degree in Physics or related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ progressively responsible full time relevant work experience
  • Experience in the research and development of detectors as well as experimental and analytical techniques
  • Clear, concise, and effective communication skills with scientist and staff outside of BNL 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Physics or related field
  • Experience and knowledge of the operation of a dedicated gas system and gas detectors

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • This position requires occasional moderate lifting (less than 30lbs), climbing or work at heights above 5’, confined space, use of powered hand tools, protracted or irregular hours, computer work.
