Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts, and vendor produced components, developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for a Mechanical Technician in the Accelerator Components & Instrumentation Group. The Accelerator Components & Instrumentation Group is responsible for operation and upgrade of a wide variety of electron, ion, and laser beam instrumentation systems for the RHIC complex of particle accelerators and other existing and planned accelerator systems. Under general technical direction, and with some latitude for the exercise of initiative and judgment, in this role you will support scientific and professional staff by providing technical support for the operation of a variety of complex beam line instrumentation systems, involving working with existing and future planned line instrumentation, and may eventually plan, coordinate, and perform challenging assignments related to beam line component assemblies, support of photo-injectors and laser systems. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural science community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for a wide variety of existing and new beam instrumentation systems
  • Work with engineers and technical team to develop, maintain and upgrade instrumentation systems throughout the C-AD complex
  • Successfully complete periodic training on the environmental, health and safety rules

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires an associate degree in a technical field, or equivalent relevant experience, or technical institute graduate with relevant work experience
  • Must have the ability to work with electronic/mechanical systems
  • The ability to work from mechanical drawings and schematics
  • Experience with mechanical fabrications, knowledge of machine shop practices, micrometers, height gauges
  • Familiarity with computers and computer-generated drawings
  • Clear and concise written and oral communication skills
  • Must be committed to working safely under strict guidelines

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Training, education and/or experience with precision electrical/mechanical operating systems
  • CNC experience is desirable

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Will receive periodic training on the environmental, health and safety rules
  • Responsible for following all of the rules and keeping refresher training up to date
  • Lifting up to 30 pounds
  • Climbing of ladders 


  • Valid  driver’s license required for travel between on-site buildings
  • Must be available for off hour call-in
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
  • Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
