Electronics Technician

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Support group has an opening for an Electronics Technician. As a group member, you will work with a shift team, working 12-hour rotating shifts. The shift team is purposed with minimizing particle accelerator downtime by means of timely troubleshooting and basic repairs of various electronic equipment while maintaining a focus on safety. You will be responsible for repairs and construction of electronic assemblies and test fixtures while gaining exposure to many complex machines unique to the field of particle physics, supporting talented engineers. This position will have a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and repair circuits down to electronic component level
  • Provide troubleshooting and repair support for high-current power supplies, PLC control systems and specialized equipment throughout the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider facility
  • Create and maintain documentation using any combination of MS Programs

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires an associate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience or technical institute graduate with relevant field work experience
  • Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts and cover additional shifts with possible short notice
  • Understanding of basic electronics principles
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, modify and build electrical/electronic systems from schematic drawings
  • Ability to effectively and timely troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Use of basic power tools and assemble chassis

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Two (2) years' relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with Lock-Out, Tag-Out procedures is preferred, but training will be provided
  • Familiarity with function generators, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers
  • Experience with high-voltage/ high-current power supplies, analog/digital electronics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), basic computer networking
  • Some knowledge of computer programming with languages such as C, C++, Visual Basic

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be safety-conscious and able to follow detailed written procedures
  • Lifting up to 30 pounds, continuous walking / standing, climb a ladder and work at heights up to 30 feet
  • Use of devices/power supplies with up to 480V input voltage and output currents in the range of tens to thousands of amperes
  • Equipment-specific training will be provided

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $23.23 - $40.07 per hour. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
