Electro-Mechanical Technician

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW 

The Isotope Research and Production Department (IP) is part of the Nuclear Particle Physics Directorate. The program’s focus is three-fold: to produce and distribute radioisotopes for applications in industry, environment, and medicinal applications, maintain infrastructure, and perform research and development for new applications.  The major facilities of the IP Department include the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), the Cyclotron facility and the Radionuclide Research and Production Laboratory hosting two suites of hot cells.  The BLIP utilizes high intensity proton beams of up to 200 MeV and the cyclotron uses protons from 13 to 19 MeV to irradiate targets. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The IP group is seeking an experienced mechanical or electro-mechanical technician.  In this role, you will be an integral part of the IP team leading and supporting technical and engineering-related activities, and coordinating tasks to ensure technical aspects of projects meet IP operational needs. In addition to providing general technical support to the IP Department, you will be responsible for overseeing assigned technical activities associated with IP operations and facilities, including working closely with engineers and operators in design of new equipment/systems, modification of existing components/systems, maintenance of existing systems. Key aspect is the ability integrate a technical approach with multiple-disciplines as necessary. IP systems include HVAC, target cooling water, hot cells, shielding, shielded casks, remote manipulators, robotic arm, helium cooling, compressed air, electro-mechanical interfaces.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing/coordinating design, procurement, and installation of assigned technical projects

  • Interface with other technical, operations, and engineering disciplines and technicians to integrate applicable expertise

  • Lead technical projects from conceptual design through installation ensuring IP interests are integrated and retained

  • Ensure configuration management process is effectively implemented

  • Create successful partnerships with directorate management, scientific and operational personnel, engineering support and technical groups and other program representatives to support initiatives with common efforts

  • Review and revising procedures

  • Assisting in planning, designing and implementation of equipment and facility improvements

  • Interface with engineers to ensure designs are code compliant, and adhere to BNL design standards/guidelines

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years’ experience or;

    • a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;

    • 10 years’ relevant work experience. Hands-on technical knowledge and experience in mechanical systems and electrical (power) such as general design, process control, equipment design and installation, configuration management, and Design Change Control. This would include experience in facility-based design and/or process-based design projects.

  • Proven multi-disciplinary competencies and ability interfacing with technical staff including machine shop, welding, shop, electricians, riggers to achieve project objectives.

  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate across all levels of management and staff

  • Able to evaluate proposed solutions and weigh their impact on cost, scheduling of construction, and long-term maintenance

  • Proficient in AutoCAD to produce design drawings and sketches

  • Work as part of multi-discipline teams

  • On-time and on-budget delivery of projects

  • Professional, inclusive, and productive interpersonal and teamwork skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • a BS degree in a technical field and 6 years work experience or;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 10 years’ experience or;

    • a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) and 11 years relevant work experience or;

    • 12 years’ relevant work experience.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Visual Acuity

  • Arm/hand dexterity

  • Climbing fixed ladders

  • Working with and handling radioactive material

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $84,100 - $113,133 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group
