Electro-Mechanical Technician

Repair, troubleshoot, construct, install, and test electro-mechanical equipment and chassis for large cryogenic and superconducting RF systems used in NSLS II.  The range of this job will be from doing repair and construction of a wide variety of large electro-mechanical systems such as 250kW helium compressors, helium purifier systems, Radio Frequency waveguide systems and copper or superconducting RF cavities.



Qualifications Required:

  • AAS degree in electro-mechanical technology or equivalent, plus at least four years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the manufacture, repair and maintenance of complex electro-mechanical systems such as AC and stepper motor drive sytems, air compressors or similar equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard test equipment (function generators, oscilloscopes, multi-meters).
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work from mechanical drawings and schematics
  • Demonstrated committment to working safely under strict guidelines.
  • Basic machine shop skills.
  • Overtime work, including emergency call-in, will be required.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Experience with cryogenic and vacuum systems in an accelerator, scientific, or research  facility.
  • Previous experience in motor controls.
  • Experience in rebuilding of precision machinery such as screw or piston compressors, electrical motor drive systems.
  • Experience with high power electrical systems.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
