The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Position Description
The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for an Electrical Technician in the Accelerator Components & Instrumentation Group. The Accelerator Components & Instrumentation Group is responsible for operation and upgrade of a wide variety of electron, ion, and laser beam instrumentation systems for the RHIC complex. In this role you will provide technical support for the operation of a variety of complex beam line instrumentation systems, involving working with new and existing beam line instrumentation, and may eventually plan, coordinate, and perform challenging assignments related to beam line component assemblies, support of photo-injectors and laser systems.This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide hands on technical support for a wide variety of existing and new beam instrumentation systems
- Work with engineers and technical team to develop, maintain and upgrade instrumentation systems throughout the C-AD complex
- Working with analog/digital chassis, circuit board repair and first article chassis fabrications
- Successfully complete and maintain current all training assigned and ensure compliance accordingly
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent relevant experience, or technical institute graduate with relevant work experience
- Experience working with electronic systems
- Demonstrated ability to work from electronic schematics
- Experience with electronic system chassis assembly work
- Familiarity with computers and Excel, Word, and electronic circuit drawing software
- Clear and concise written and oral communication skills
- Must be committed to working safely under strict guidelines
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Training, education and/or experience with precision electrical/mechanical operating systems
- Training, education and/or experience with instrumentation devices
- Knowledgeable of UHV operating systems is a plus
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Will receive periodic training on the environmental, health and safety rules
- Responsible for following all of the rules and keeping refresher training up to date
- Lifting up to 30 pounds
- Climb a ladder above 5 feet
OTHER INFORMATION:
- Driver’s license required for travel between on-site buildings
- Must be available for off hour call-in
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
- Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
