The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Booster/Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) Power Supply Group in the Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for a Staff Engineer. This group is responsible for the operation and the upgrade of power supplies associated with both the Booster and the AGS accelerators, the Booster to AGS transfer line, the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) transfer line, the Solenoidal Tracker at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (STAR) and the Super Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction Experiment (sPHENIX) detector experimental supplies. All interlocks for these power supplies are Programming Logic Controller (PLC)-based systems. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Generate engineering drawings and execute detailed design
Prepare statements of work and specifications for the procurement of new power supplies
Prepare presentations for design reviews
Build and evaluate prototype(s) and estimate cost and schedule parameters for all Projects
Evaluate vendors and manage component procurement within project scope
Upgrade and maintain existing power supply systems, control systems and test instruments
Write software for instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition systems
Plan and conduct preventive maintenance
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or closely related field of study
Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible related work experience
Must be able to analyze and troubleshoot systems using test equipment such as meters, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers
Experience with power electronics and feedback control systems
Must be self-motivated, able to work under minimum supervision and be available for off-hours call-ins’ as required
Ability to work and learn details about various topologies of power electronics and associated feedback control systems
Clear and concise written and oral communications skills
Must be able to support a team with diverse skills and talents during all phases of operations, new construction, testing, repair and upgrade of existing or new power supplies
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A master’s degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in power electronics
Experience with programming Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Ability to carry weights up to 30 lbs.
Ability to work at heights and climb a ladder
Ability to walk along sloped terrain and uneven surfaces
May stand for long periods of time
Oxygen Deficiency Hazard class 0 training certified
Radiation worker training
Lockout Tagout training
Take all necessary training to perform work safely
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $91850 - $128400 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
