Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University. BSA salutes our veterans and active military members with careers that leverage the skills and unique experience they gained while serving our country. Our organization fully supports service members transitioning from active duty to civilian life and pledge’s our commitment to actively hire veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Military personnel who have been formally trained or have relevant experience obtained while in service may meet educational requirements and are encouraged to apply for job opportunities at BSA.

Organizational Overview

The mission of the Instrumentation Division is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.

Position Description

The Instrumentation Division has an opening for a scientist to work on advanced detector development for applications in high energy and nuclear physics.  The Division has a long history in designing and fabricating unique detector technology, and currently has key roles in the production of TPCs (Time Projection Chambers) for the flagship DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) under construction in a South Dakota mine. R&D activities geared toward detectors for the Forward Physics Facility (FPF) at CERN, particularly the Forward Liquid Argon Experiment (FLArE) are also a focus of the Instrumentation team. The Division has design, fabrication and testing capabilities for various sub-systems that make up a TPC and is involved in several other experiments that will be built around novel TPC detectors for rare searches, neutrino and dark matter physics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the Division’s excellent reputation for developing state-of-the-art detector systems
  • Enhance the Division’s capabilities in all aspects of detector design, fabrication, and testing
  • Participate and take leadership roles in future rare event experiments using noble liquids or other

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in particle physics or nuclear physics and 8+ years post PhD experience
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research independently and as part of a group
  • Experience with assembly, commissioning, operations and analysis of neutrino experiments
  • Significant record of accomplishment in experimental physics, especially using noble liquids
  • Proficiency with scientific computing and excellent written, oral, and presentation skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive experience with electronics for particle physics, especially “cold” electronics
  • Good basic knowledge and understanding of neutrino physics and dark energy/matter
