Cyclotron Technician

The Isotope Research and Production Department (IP) has an opening for a Cyclotron Technician to aid in the research and production of isotopes produced via proton irradiation at the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP) and the MIRP Cyclotron. In this role you will be responsible for target irradiations and performing routine testing and maintaining of the BLIP facility and the cyclotron.  Further conducting analytical measurements to assess purity and quantification of water samples and radionuclides.  The main program focus is to produce and distribute radioisotopes for applications in industry, environment and medicinal applications.  The major facilities of the IP group include the BLIP, the Cyclotron facility and the Radionuclide Research and Production Laboratory. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

The main program focus is to produce and distribute radioisotopes for nuclear medicine research and clinical practice and to develop radioisotopes for new applications in medicine and science. The groups major facilities include the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), and the fully equipped hot laboratory with hot cells, radiochemistry research laboratories, and analytical equipment. The BLIP utilizes high intensity proton beams up to 200 MeV.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operating BLIP and Cyclotron facility: this includes daily, annual and otherwise scheduled monitoring and maintenance of various facility systems

  • Performing irradiations, target transfers, testing and maintenance following standard operating procedures

  • Disposal of radioactive, hazardous and mixed waste

  • Performing maintenance and minor equipment repairs

  • Writing and revising procedures

  • Assisting in planning, designing and implementation of equipment and facility improvements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • BS degree in a technical field and 4 years full time relevant work experience or;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years of full time relavent experience or;

    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years full time relevant work experience or;

    • 10 years relevant work experience

  • Ability to be trained on and learn basic chemistry laboratory skills

  • Must have basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills

  • Ability to learn different computer software to run equipment

  • Must be self-motivated

  • Clear & concise written and oral communication skills

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and with extreme attention to detail

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skills in basic machining (lathe, mill, drill press etc.) and basic shop operations

  • Experience with handling radioactivity

  • Forklift/overhead crane experience

  • Basic chemistry laboratory skills

  • Skills operating a cyclotron or performing irradiations

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to handle radioactive, hazardous and mixed waste materials

  • Must be available for off hour call-in as needed

  • This is a fully onsite position located at Upton, NY

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
