Cryogenic Technician - Mechanical

Job ID 1355 Date posted 06/26/2018

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide.  The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and also provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.

The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) has an opening for a technician to work in the cryogenic group in support of SMD R&D and Project superconducting magnet testing activities.  Working under the supervision of a senior cryogenic technician, as well as cognizant mechanical and electrical engineering staff, the candidate will be expected to become fully proficient in the operation, control and maintenance of all aspects of the cryogenic facility, including helium liquefiers, compressors, pumps, motors, purifiers, valves, helium vacuum pumps, vacuum jacketed transfer lines, and all associated controls.  The candidate will also be expected, after being fully trained, to work independently to operate the full cryogenic system during production testing of superconducting magnets for the Accelerator Upgrade Program for the High-Luminosity Upgrade of the LHC at CERN, working either a staggered early shift or late shift as Project needs require.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Using a very high degree of skill, initiative and judgment, is responsible for the performance, maintenance and repair of a superconducting magnet testing facility:

    • Operation of the SMD cryogenic facility in support of superconducting magnet testing – working knowledge of computer and manual controls, safety and functional interlocks, process requirements and safeguards.

    • Maintenance and repair of the SMD cryogenic facility components – liquefier engines, compressors, pumps, purifiers, motors, etc.

    • Completing and maintaining operation and maintenance logs

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate’s degree in a related scientific or engineering field, plus extensive job-relevant training

  • Ten (10) years of in-depth and related experience:

    • Mechanical skills – assembly and disassembly of machinery and mechanical equipment

    • Knowledge of automated process control, sensing instruments and electrical signal measurements

    • Basic understanding of pneumatic and electronic valve control

    • Familiarity with plumbing best practices

    • Ability to read mechanical drawings and P&ID drawings.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Degree in industrial or electro-mechanical systems.

  • Use of machine tools (machinist skills)

  • Mass spectrometer experience (leak testing)

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds)

  • the ability to climb a ladder
