Chair, Applied Math

The Computational Science Initiative (CSI) is responsible for foundational Computer Science and Applied Math research at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). CSI’s research is inspired by BNL’s scientific user facilities, serving BNL and the Nation.

We are seeking a chair for applied math to grow and diversify our applied math capabilities, as well as integrate applied math capabilities across CSI. Experimental facilities, generative design and exascale computing all rely heavily on advanced and novel applied methods. We are seeking an individual that can build a vibrant and sustainable applied math program at BNL.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and grow CSI’s applied math portfolio and capabilities.
  • Collaborate across CSI, BNL and the DOE complex to build successful partnerships and grow CSI’s partner network and funding in applied math.
  • Mentor applied math staff in CSI.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 15+ years of relevant experience.
  • PhD degree in applied math or similar or significant relevant and recognized experience in the topic area.
  • Extended applied math research portfolio relevant to DOE.
  • Extensive network of applied mathematicians in areas relevant to the DOE mission space.
  • Knowledge and working experience in applied math at scale on high performance computing systems.
  • Ability to lead and build high performance teams.
  • Experience in mentoring.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with large scale experimental facilities.
  • Experience in obtaining DOE ASCR grants.
  • Ability to obtain a clearance.

Other Information:

  • Work arrangement is hybrid.  We would prefer for the candidate to work pre-dominantly on-site.
  • Travel requirements will be largely limited to the US.
