ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

The mission of the Instrumentation Division is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab, to steward capabilities to advance DOE science priorities, and to maintain and advance the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. R&D activities and development of capabilities and facilities are motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future research directions. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Instrumentation Division is seeking a Deputy Director who shares our commitment to excellence in science, technology innovation, and teamwork in multidisciplinary settings. The successful candidate should be a leader in the field of scientific instrumentation and applied research with a focus on advancing the related technologies. The ability to work with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to stimulate cross-cutting research and ensure sustainable growth for the Division is essential. Management experience will be leveraged to maintain a broad portfolio of projects and activities with a diverse sponsor base.

The Instrumentation Division Deputy Director will work closely with the Instrumentation Division Director to ensure that investments in science, technology, and capabilities are aligned with strategic opportunities and offer a competitive advantage for current and future business. The Division’s growth strategy follows a balanced approach to sustain established DOE science programs, build new DOE science programs, and grow National Security programs and partnerships with academia and industry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Deputy Director will work with the IO Director to:

  • execute a vision for IO that integrates with the Laboratory's overall strategic plan.

  • oversee business planning that establishes an appropriate balance between different funding streams.

  • integrate, prioritize, and manage the Division's diverse portfolio.

  • ensure the successful implementation of the strategy for IO including the stewardship of existing capabilities and facilities.

  • maintain compliance with BNL policies standards, and procedures as documented in the Standards-Based Management System (SBMS).

  • provide oversight of appropriate resources to ensure successful execution of projects and programs.

  • stimulate collaboration between Instrumentation staff and scientists at BNL and other institutions.

  • attract, retain, and foster the development of a diverse team of talented and innovative instrumentation specialists whose expertise matches the needs of Instrumentation.

  • promote educational outreach programs and communication of strategy and the successes that result from it.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Science or Engineering discipline plus at least ten years research conducted in a large division or directorate.

  • Fifteen plus years of broad related experience which includes five plus years of demonstrated management experience, including leading large complex and multidisciplinary research programs.

  • Experience communicating with key stakeholders, clients, program sponsors, and internal staff.

  • Regarded as a leading expert and visionary in the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation for complex experimental research programs.

  • Demonstrated experience in successfully developing, implementing, and executing scientific advantages for current and future business. 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in successfully setting vision, strategy, objectives, and priorities to enhance organizational performance.

  • Experience managing large and complex programs and organizations.

  • A career that has at some time involved leadership of a demonstrably high-impact R&D program or a research network or program engaging multiple institutions.

  • Evidence of S&T breadth, or at least the ability to move into new areas.

  • Ability to obtain a federal security clearance in a timely manner.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $179650 - $285450 / year.
