The CFN is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of nearly 600 external facility users.  The CFN is a collaborative research environment, bringing together scientists with diverse expertise in areas including nanofabrication, electron microscopy, surface science, X-ray nanoscience, and theory & simulation.

Three strategic nanoscience themes underlie the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN fosters research on complex self-assembly processes for new establishing methods for constructing designed nanomaterials. The CFN supports state-of-the-art techniques for designing Nano-Architectures to improve the performance of materials. The CFN develops and provides advanced capabilities for studies of Nanomaterials in Operando Conditions, for characterizing materials and reactions at the atomic scale in real-world environments.

Position Description

The CFN is seeking an exceptional Assistant Scientist in the area of nanoscale biomaterials. You will carry out independent research focused on developing novel methods for creating designed material systems using biologically inspired methods, integrating biomolecular and nanoscale material systems and enhancing functions of designed biomaterials. You will develop novel automated material fabrication platforms to support this research activity and the research of the CFN users. You will work with CFN staff and users on fabrication and application of biomaterials using newly developed and established methods, and will support users with their reseach. You will also develop new methods for generating targeted bio- and hybrid (bio-inorganic) nanomaterials.  In this position, you will work closely with other staff members in the Soft and Bio-Nanomaterial group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

As an Assistant Scientist in the CFN:

You will conduct self-directed research in the area of biological, and hybrid nanomaterials.

  • You will develop new methods for generation of targeted biomaterials using bioinspired. strategies and automatization approaches to address outstanding nanoscience problems.

  • You will support users conducting soft and biomaterial research at the CFN in fabrication and characterizing of generated materials.

  • You will collaborate with nanoscience colleagues within the CFN and the broader community.

  • You will publish your research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • You will be an active CFN community member by participating in scientific and operational activities. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are qualified for this Assistant/Associate Scientist position if:

  • You have earned a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or a suitable Engineering discipline and have carried out at least two years of research after earning your Ph.D, for example as a postdoctoral researcher, research assistant, industrial scientist, or an equivalent position

  • You have conducted high-quality research in bionanomaterials, or hybrid bio-inorganic nanomaterials, and demonstrated expertise in structural and biochemical/chemical aspects of generated biomaterials

  • You have expertise in molecular and nanoscale structural characterization of materials using several advanced techniques, such as cryo-electron microscopy, x-ray scattering, AFM and other relevant methods

  • You have expertise in biomaterial design and fabrication of larger scale biomolecular materials and assemblies using nucleic acids, proteins, and enzymatic systems, and in using or developing relevant software tools

  • You are committed to working safely in the laboratory and fostering an environment of safe-work practices.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are well-matched to this position if:

  • You have applied biomolecular design software for predicting and creating new targeted materials

  • You have experience in biomolecular purification and separation methods

  • You generated biomaterials with novel biological, chemical, optical, or mechanical functions

  • You have a working knowledge of programming languages and experience with automated synthesis systems

  • You have interest in building and managing automatized instrumentation for material synthesis
