Assistant Physicist - Accelerator PhysicsJob ID 2190 Date posted 06/03/2020
Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
The EIC seeks an Assistant Physicist in Accelerator Physics to work on strong hadron cooling with micro-bunched electron beams and other phenomena which involve modeling and simulation of intense particle beams. The candidate will play a central role in the design of cooling systems for the electron ion collider. This task will include developing theory, writing computer code to model the process and carrying out extensive simulations. The simulations will be carried out to support the design of the EIC strong hadron cooling facility and study the stability of intense hadron and electron beams. Related work involves design of an energy recovery linac for intense and bright electron beams and developing a methodology for implementing cooling in the EIC. The expertise and the skills, as well as the developed software, are also relevant for other accelerator physics efforts and contributions to these by the successful candidate are considered possible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the EIC R&D program on strong electron cooling development
- Develop theory and computer code for the purpose listed above
- Simulate the associated beam dynamics processes
- Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff
- Ph.D. in Physics or a related discipline
- Several years of experience working on coherent electron cooling and related phenomena
- Experience in modeling complex problems involving multi-particle effects
- Good mathematical and problem-solving skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with parallel computing
- Familiarity with computer programming languages such as C++, PYTHON, or similar
- Familiarity with PIC codes
- Domestic and international travel may be required
- The selected candidate would be hired for an initial two year term; term renewal contingent on funding and performance
