The Environmental & Climate Sciences Department (www.bnl.gov/envsci) at Brookhaven National Laboratory focuses on a wide range of theoretical, experimental, and field studies in support of the U.S. Department of Energy's climate and energy research agendas. Work is supported by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility (www.arm.gov), an observations-based program that measures aerosols, clouds, precipitation, radiation, and atmospheric dynamics; the Atmospheric Systems Research Program; and the Environmental System Science Program. This work is pursued with the ultimate goal of improving predictability and reducing the uncertainty in global and regional climate models. The department research portfolio also includes development of environmental technologies and applications for renewable energies, urban science, and national security.
Within the department, the Aerosol Chemistry and Microphysics Group is focused on improving process-level understanding of aerosol formation and evolution mechanisms, aerosol optical properties and light absorption, and the direct and indirect influences that aerosols have on clouds, precipitation, and climate. Understanding the physics, chemistry, and dynamics of interactions along this aerosol-cloud-precipitation continuum is crucial for development of a predictive understanding of the climate system. To this end, the group leads the mentorship of the Aerosol Observing System for the ARM User Facility. These observations are supported by various measurement platforms and instrument suites designed to conduct in situ observations of aerosols and related trace gases that are deployed as part of ARM’s ‘supersite’ observatories, designed to characterize the aerosol-cloud-precipitation spectrum.
Under the supervision of ARM Instrument Mentors at BNL, the selected candidate will work with aerosol instrumentation and other related systems for their maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration in a diverse, international, and collaborative environment. The aerosol instrumentation includes instruments and systems deployed in the ARM Aerosol Observing Systems (AOS) (https://www.arm.gov/capabilities/instruments/aos). This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Set up aerosol instruments in the laboratory and/or in the field for maintenance and calibration
- Design and complete experiments using guidelines provided by the Mentors
- Perform basic instrument troubleshooting and maintenance
- Perform basic calibration experiments under the supervision of an Instrument Mentor
- Set up instruments and related systems in the ARM Aerosol Observing Systems (AOS), including installing instruments in the equipment racks, setting up sampling and verifying plumbing connections, setting up electrical connections, and verifying network connectivity and data flow. Work with ARM Instrument Mentors to investigate issues with data flow from instruments to ARM archive
- Gather data from instruments and perform basic data analysis (plotting variables, calculating statistics, etc.). Draw conclusions from data analysis
- Suggest changes to current and future experiments
- Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication
- Purchase spare parts and supplies based on Mentor specifications
- Organize, prepare, verify, and track shipping and repair of instruments and instrument components
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- BS degree in physical sciences, engineering, or IT
- Minimum of three (3) years full-time progressively responsible experience with aerosol instrumentation and related systems – installation, day-to-day operation, and basic maintenance, including in field conditions
- Experience in computer networking – connecting instruments to the network (e.g., making network cables, verifying IP addresses) and setting up remote connections
- Experience in working with electrical and electronic circuitry – identifying components, measuring voltages, soldering
- Proficiency in basic productivity software such as MS Word, MS Excel
- Experience in basic computer programming in any modern language (examples include, but are not limited to: Python, Visual Basic, C/C++, Java)
- Ability to work well in a diverse team across cultures, language skills and experiences
- Ability to learn basics of scientific and engineering software such as Igor, Matlab, LabView
- Ability to travel (foreign and domestic) in support of instruments
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with ARM operations and systems
- Working knowledge of scientific and engineering software such as Igor, Matlab, LabView
