Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under minimum supervision installs, repairs, and maintains overhead and underground electrical distribution lines, systems, equipment, controls and related devices, ordinarily of 2300 volts and over.
  • Duties include rigging, electrical and mechanical work incidental to the installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment, wires, lines, instruments, and fabricated metal on structures such as meteorology towers, pile stack and water tower.
  • Will otherwise perform duties of Electrician A.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a High School diploma, GED, or higher.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience.
  • BNL electricians applying for Tower line positions must have completed the approved "ICS Tower Line" curriculum.
  • Must have the ability to read one-line electrical schematics.
  • Must have the ability to change cross arms, insulators, pins, transformers and other overhead electrical equipment.
  • Ability to splice underground cables utilizing heat, cold shrink, mechanical, type splices. 
  • Must be able to perform emergency work and be available for emergency call-ins. 
  • Demonstrate understanding and functioning of Medium Voltage equipment.
  • Familiarity with gas, oil, air, and vacuum breakers.
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL Class A license with metal coil endorsement.
  • Ability to act as a primary authorized employee for Complex Lock-out/Tag-out.
  • Perform duties of the primary authorized employee for Employee-in-Charge for switching orders and clearances.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Graduate from an apprenticeship program for electrician or lineman.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers, and supervisors.
  • Must have had a verifiable "acceptable leave record" in prior employment.
  • Must be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.
  • Knowledge of various fault detection methods for underground distribution feeders.
  • Knowledge of switching procedures.
  • Experience calibrating protective relays, circuit breakers, and transformer load tap changers.
  • Understanding of OSHA 1910.169 electrical safety work practices and requirements.

Other Requirements:

  • Must have a telephone and must provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Must be capable of following written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers, and supervisors.
  • Must have had a verifiable "acceptable leave record" in prior employment.
  • Must be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Considerations:

  • Standing, bending, and lifting, up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights greater than 5 ft.
  • Use of a respirator when required.
  • Work outdoors/cold environments.
  • Work in warm environments.
  • Rigging and hoisting.
  • Use of aerial lifts and bucket trucks.
  • Use of powered and air operated hand tools.
  • Operates forklifts, digger/derrick vehicles or other heavy equipment.
  • Work with machinery including benchtop grinders and similar.
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, and 40 calorie PPE.

The Lab's placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. The salary for the role is $46.00 per hour.
