Senior Technician Electronics

The mission of the Instrumentation Department is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics. 

Position Description:

The Instrumentation Department has an opening for an Electronics Technician in the Electronics Packaging, Integration & Systems Group. The selected candidate will work on assignments along with other group members and play an essential role supporting a broad range of technical projects, including electronic designs which are typically based on surface mount technology (SMT). May direct and coordinate the work efforts of other technical support personnel assigned to a specific project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support surface mount (SMT) printed circuit board assembly
  • Support soldering processes and rework
  • Support assembly processes
  • Support hand solder paste dispensing and stencil processes
  • Support cable assemblies
  • Communicate directly with scientists and engineers to provide critical feedback relating to prototype assembly
  • Partner with engineers in designing or updating prototypes
  • Consistently produce precise and accurate work

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

           Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

  •   A technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AS degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL or;
  •   A technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 1 year’s relevant work experience or;
  •   2 years relevant work experience
  •   Basic understanding of electronics
  •   Experience with Microsoft Office applications
  •   Hand tool proficiency
  •   Hand soldering knowledge and capability
  •   Computer proficiency
  •   Ability to work independently and as a team member
  •   Ability to consistently produce precise and accurate work
  •   Good problem-solving abilities
  •   Effective communication skills
  •   Self-motivated and work well under minimal supervision
  •   Strong motivation to learn and apply new capabilities

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •   Experience with reflow ovens and pick and place equipment
  •   Experience with BGA placement and rework
  •   Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  •   Experience with PCB design/layout

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  •   Ability to perform lifting (over 30 lbs.) 
  •   Must have good sight and hand dexterity for precision work with small components and circuits.

  • This is an On-Site opening.
  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $49500 - $56000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
