The Magnet Division also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.
Magnet Division (MD) has an opening for a senior lead-level cryogenic engineer with experience in the analysis, design, and operation of helium liquefaction and refrigeration systems and equipment for cooling superconducting devices. Work scope will include upgrades and maintenance of current MD cryogenic equipment as well as the design and planning for future EIC cryogenic systems and equipment. As a lead in the cryogenics group, the candidate will supervise and lead others in projects. The role also involves participating in the daily operations of the MD cryogenic plant.
This is an on-site role but, depending on project schedules and other workplace demands, work from home is allowed 1-2 days a week. A teleworking agreement can be arranged with the group supervisor.
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate professional level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills, as well as years of relevant experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Managing individual engineering projects and developing project plans including schedules, needed resources, and budgets.
- Leading a team of technicians and/or other employees by supervising their work and daily activities
- Work independently and collaborate with other senior engineering and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support.
- Do overall system level engineering, define equipment requirements, prepare equipment purchase specifications and drawing packages, following lab safety standards and national safety and equipment codes.
- Oversight of engineers and designers during the engineering and design of cryogenic components, and develop designs of cryogenic components inside cryostats, of vacuum jacketed cryogenic piping system and warm piping systems between equipment and piping supports.
- Collaborate with technical staff on the mechanical interfaces and cryogenic requirements during the construction, commissioning, maintenance and operation of cryogenic systems. Coordinate fabrication, assembly, testing and installation of equipment.
- Develop purchase specifications, interface and follow up with vendor/fabricator during vendor manufacturing, travel for design meetings and witness tests.
- Present the engineering and design in design reviews with technical staff.
- Manage or supervise the creation and implementation of work planning procedures, hazard analyses, safety reviews, and supervise technicians during assembly, installation, and commissioning of equipment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
- Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in the engineering and or operations of cryogenic systems, helium plant or other plant process equipment and component systems.
- Experience with plant/system process simulation and use of cryogenic thermodynamic and transport properties database such as HePak, Gaspak, Refprop, Aspen HYSYS or other plant process simulation software.
- Experience with creating and reviewing detailed piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and process flow diagrams (PFDs) for cryogenic plant systems.
- Experience with practical finite element analysis using ANSYS Workbench
- Excellent written and oral skills and proficient with MS Office and MS Excel.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- An MS degree or higher in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or a closely related field, with a specialization in cryogenic engineering.
- Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in the engineering and or operations of cryogenic systems, helium plant or other plant process equipment and component systems.
- Experience in supervising or Leading teams preferred.
- Process experience in cryogenic plants or with other refrigeration cycles is greatly desired.
- Ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals.
- Familiarity with ASME BPVC VIII and ASME B31.3 Piping Code, and CGA standards.
- Familiarity with NFPA and OSHA requirements.
- Familiarity with ASME/ASCE standards, building codes, NFPA and OSHA requirements.
- Project development and management skills, proficient with MS Project.
- Professional Engineering license.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Individual may be required to climb ladders and/or work in Confined Spaces.
- Individual may be required to work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard area.
- Individual may be required to work in High Noise environment.
- Individual may be required to work in Static Magnetic fields area greater than 5 Gauss.
- Individual will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in Radiation areas.
- Individual may be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support mission critical projects.
Other Information:
- Individual may be required to travel to attend vendor meetings, project reviews, and conferences, and training.
- Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $111300 - $160000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
