The mission of the Laboratory Protection Division (LP) is to serve and protect the Laboratory population by providing response services and technical expertise allowing world class science to occur in a safe and secure environment. The Police Group within LP, protects classified matter, special nuclear materials, hazardous materials, and property against theft, diversion, or destruction. It is responsible for Laboratory entry and access controls, intrusion detection, alarm assessment response services for police, security, emergencies and crisis management support.
Position Description
The Laboratory Protection Division (LP) currently has a full-time opportunity for a Security Police Officer. A Security Police Officer serves to protect Department of Energy (DOE) security interests from theft and other hostile acts that may cause adverse impacts on national security or the health and safety of the public, and to protect life and property. Requirements include but are not limited to: knowledge and proficiency in the use and care of all assigned weapons, the ability to operate all assigned communication equipment and proficiency in the use of accepted communication terminology, knowledge of and the ability to apply site and facility policies and procedures as well as knowledge of federal granted applicable authorities. Must be knowledgeable of and able to apply DOE policy on the use of deadly physical force and limited arrest authority, and possess familiarity with post and patrol operations, investigation procedures and the use of tactical skills necessary to engage and neutralize armed/unarmed adversaries. Must meet the medical and physical fitness standards and fulfill requirements and standards according to DOE orders. You must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to operate all assigned vehicles.
This position reports to the Police Captain. The Police Group provides security for Brookhaven National Laboratory 24 hours per day/7 days per week therefore the Security Police Officer will be required to work weekends and holidays.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct armed stationery, foot and/or vehicle patrol (interior and/or exterior).
- Control access and/or egress of personnel, materials and vehicles.
- Deter criminal activity, misconduct, and safety violations.
- Operate emergency vehicles.
- Manage multiple tasks, and to be flexible in changing priorities.
- Maintain composure and operate effectively under high stress situations.
- Operate assigned communication equipment and use accepted communication terminology
- Utilize computerized record systems.
- Successfully apply conflict management techniques.
- Deal courteously, but firmly, with people having diverse social and cultural backgrounds and languages.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- An associate’s degree in criminal justice or social sciences/psychology, plus three (3) years’ related work experience in such as county, state or federal law enforcement; military police/infantry experience, or armed security: OR
- A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice plus, two (2) years’ related work of experience in county, state or federal law enforcement, or military police/infantry, or armed security: OR
- In lieu of an associate’s degree in criminal justice, or social sciences/psychology, requires a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in county, state or federal law enforcement; or military police/infantry, or armed security.
- Knowledge and proficient in the use and care of weapons.
- Ability to operate communication equipment and proficiency in accepted communication terminology.
- Possess familiarity with post and patrol operations, investigation procedures and the use of tactical skills necessary to engage and neutralize armed/unarmed adversaries.
- Excellent communication skills: verbal and written.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply conflict management techniques.
- Ability to deal courteously, but firmly, with people having diverse social and cultural backgrounds and languages.
- Possess a valid drivers’ license.
- Applicants must be willing and able to work overtime and to work any shift.
- Successful completion of the U.S. Department of Energy Basic Security Police Officer Training course. May require travel to offsite training facilities.
- Security clearance requirements:
- Must undergo and receive a favorable disposition in a preliminary background investigation (criminal, credit, prior employment, etc.); Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance which requires that you: be a US citizen; have no felony convictions or other serious offenses; have an honorable discharge from military, and a good credit history. Obtaining and maintaining a security clearance is a condition of employment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
After all requirements in the above section are met, the following experience will be considered in our overall qualification evaluation:
- Experience with the Incident Command System.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements:
- Medical/physical requirements: Successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination according to 10 CFR 1046 standards (including drug/alcohol screening) and a psychological examination. Successfully pass a physical fitness test which includes a 1/2 mile run in 4 minutes 40 seconds and a 40 yards prone-to-running dash in 8.5 seconds. Passing the medical and psychological examination and physical fitness test is a condition of employment.
- In addition to successfully passing all pre-employment testing, will require the successful completion/passing, on an annual basis, of a medical and psychological examination will be subject to random drug screening and randomly selected to perform the physical fitness standard for qualification.

The successful applicant will be required to join the International Union Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) and its Local Union No. 648
