RCD-External Dosimetrist

The ESH Directorate provides best in class environmental, safety and health services along with Radiation Control Division’s state of art in radiation protection to enable discovery, cutting edge science and operational excellence.

The responsibility of the External Dosimetrist is to provide technical support for all phases of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLD) personnel monitoring program to process TLDs, to perform algorithms calculations and generate dose reports. In this role, you will perform the dosimetry functions with assurance to quality for dose processing and dose reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform operations consistent with DOELAP accreditation standards, maintain accreditation and pass the performance tests to achieve the accreditation.

  • Maintain the conduct of operations, logistic functions, including equipment, facilities, supplies to ensure timely and accurate dosimetry monitoring and dose reporting.

  • Operate the TLD Readers and perform daily QA/QC for the Readers and algorithm setup parameters used in the dose processing.

  • Expose the quality control TLDs to known radiation fields in the calibration facility for quality assurance/control.

  • Calibrate the Readers for quality and dose processing on a required frequency.

  • Review glow curves, and dose reports for anomalous results and correct the responses.

  • Upload the dose of records, neutrons, and extremity dose results in the database and resolve any issues associated with the process.

  • Prepare and distribute the dose reports to workers, visitors, and researchers. Serve as functionally accountable to trouble shoot IT systems used in external dosimetry measurements, databases, algorithms, and measurements.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in dosimetry implementation.

  • Bachelor’s degree in radiation protection/ dosimetry/Health Physics/Nuclear engineering or equivalent.

  • Expert knowledge of external dosimetry measurements, instruments, calculations, and systems

  • Expert knowledge of DOE radiation protection regulatory requirements.

  • Provide excellent customer service to dosimetry users, facility support and managers.

  • Work effectively and collaboratively with team members, managers, and regulators.

  • Have written, oral and communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 7 years’ experience in dosimetry implementation.

  • Certification: NRRPT or ABHP.

  • Experience with DOELAP accreditation process and audits.

  • DOE Orders, radiation protection regulations- 10CFR835.

  • Knowledge of data management, SQL, Oracle database, query.

  • Knowledge of dosimetry and radiobioassay radiation protection requirements.

  • Experiencing in dosimetry systems, calculations and technical implementation.

  • This is an On-Site opening.

  • The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on the depth and breadth of relevant engineering knowledge, skills and experience.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $94250 - $155800 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
