Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.
Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a distinguished physicist to lead advanced detector systems research and development. The candidate will be part of the Instrumentation Department leadership team and will play an integral role in formulating and executing a strategic vision that will allow us to continue our legacy of pioneering advances in the field of instrumentation systems. The Lead Scientist will be responsible for focusing the work of a talented team of experts in the Instrumentation Department across a broad range of application areas, and for expanding our capabilities to address the emerging mission areas of the DOE Office of Science and other national needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help develop and execute a vision for IO that makes optimal use of our facilities and expertise and is aligned with the Laboratory's strategic priorities.
- Assist the IO Department Chair in development of strategic plans for the department and its three divisions.
- Develop and implement plans for future detector systems that will provide breakthrough capabilities for driving cutting edge advances in high energy and nuclear physics, quantum information processing, materials science, and national security.
- Attract, retain, and foster a world-leading team of dedicated experts capable of delivering instrumentation systems that significantly advance the state of the art.
- Provide stewardship of IO's existing technology and direct its future growth.
- Provide leadership in maintaining and expanding relationships with key sponsors: national funding agencies, industry, academia, etc.
- Take a lead role in at least one major multi-laboratory collaboration.
- Coordinate publications, conference presentations, and technical liaison throughout the international detector systems community.
- Significant amount of domestic and international travel required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- PhD in Physics or equivalent disciplines
- At least fifteen (15) years’ experience with research in advanced detector technology and applications.
- At least ten (10) years' experience in a management role with responsibility for delivering leading edge detector systems with strict performance, schedule, and budget requirements.
- Record of significant scientific and/or technical achievements in advanced detector systems development, supported by awards or other recognition from scientific institutes.
- Demonstrated expertise through holding Principal Investigator position in an internationally recognized research program that overlaps some of the IO core technologies and research directions.
- Excellent communication abilities with technical and scientific co-workers and critical stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collegial relationships and collaborate with all levels of staff within the Laboratory including Senior Leadership.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Detailed knowledge of and demonstrated experimental skills in ultra-low noise techniques in silicon-based radiation detectors.
- Understanding of the special requirements of space-based scientific instruments.

OTHER INFORMATION:
- Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $176450 - 240000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
