The Data Science and Systems Integration Program of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) works collaboratively with scientific, engineering, and technical staff to enable continued operations and further develop experimental capabilities of the 29 and growing number of state-of-the-art synchrotron beamlines. The NSLS-II offers a large-scale scientific facility working environment, which combines the scope of a large industrial facility with the excitement and challenges of world-class research experiments.
Position Description
The National Synchrotron Light Source-II is seeking exceptional candidates for the Data Science and Systems Integration Program (DSSI). This role resides in the Instrument and Controls group within DSSI, focusing on the development, deployment, commissioning, and maintenance of software for beamline and accelerator instrumentation, such as measurement devices and precision motion control systems. The successful candidate will configure, support, and develop applications in Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) software and create graphical interfaces in Control System Studio software in a Linux environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work collaboratively with scientific, engineering, and technical staff to deliver software control solutions for beamline and accelerator instrumentation, including motion control systems.
• Develop software tools and services collaboratively within DSSI teams for NSLS-II.
• Collaborate within varied teams to troubleshoot technical issues and advance experimental capabilities for beamline and accelerator at NSLS-II.
• Contribute to the instrument and control system for the future accelerator upgrade and new beamline construction.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• BA/BS Degree or equivalent experience, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, or related STEM discipline. Candidates in this role will possess 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Demonstrated programming experience in C, C++, or Python.
• Working knowledge of developing in a Linux operating system environment.
• Practical knowledge of software and hardware engineering practices that include gathering requirements, design, testing, documentation, source code management and release procedures.
• Demonstrated initiative and ability to take ownership of projects and tasks.
• Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with professionals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Bachelor’s or higher degree and 8+ years of experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related STEM discipline.
• Experience with Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS), including EPICS driver support for various IO protocols such as UART, Modbus, SNMP and EtherCAT, etc.
• Experience with control software for scientific equipment, especially for synchrotron accelerator or synchrotron experiments.
• Experience with motion control technologies, particularly with timing-critical high precision positioner control.
• Experience managing distributed software systems with standard tools such as Git, Ansible, RedHat Satellite, etc.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the salary range for this position is $90,800 - $140,000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
