Electro-Mechanical Technician

The National Synchrotron Light Source is a state-of-the-art, medium-energy (3-billion-electron-volt, or GeV) electron storage ring that produces x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than the NSLS. The mission of the National Synchrotron Light Source is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. To support this program, the NSLS-II must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate and focus electron and X-ray beams. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the NSLS-II scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The NSLS-II supports an international user community of over 2,200 researchers from 400 universities. The NSLS-II performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

NSLS-II Electrical Engineering Technical Support Group has an opening for an Electro-Mechanical technician. The successful candidate must demonstrate expertise in the fabrication, installation, troubleshooting, and operations of electrical and mechanical systems. Must be able to troubleshoot electrical systems to diagnose problems and repair. This position will require close interaction with technicians and engineers.  The main task will be to assemble, wire, and test power supply and Personnel Protection System (PPS) subassemblies. Tasks will also include cable pulling, cable termination, mechanical assembly and technical support for development projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for power supplies and personnel protection systems (PPS)

  • Proficient with schematics and electrical/mechanical assembly drawings

  • Troubleshoot electrical systems to diagnose and repair, down to subsystem and component level

  • Cable pulling and cable termination

  • Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • a BS degree in a technical field OR;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years’ experience OR;

    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience OR:

    • 6 years relevant work experience

  • Experience with fabrication, assembly, wiring, and testing electronic systems

  • Experience with assembly, testing, and adjustment of complex mechanical systems

  • Use of test and measurement equipment, including electrical multi-meter and oscilloscope

  • Experience with electrically powered and pneumatically operated hand tools

  • Troubleshooting skills in digital and analog circuits

  • Strong organization and documentation skills

  • Self-motivated with good workmanship

  • Capable of using Microsoft Office products like Outlook, Word, and Excel

  • Strong safety ethic and knowledge of safe work practices in complex systems

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent plus:

    • a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience OR;

    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years’ experience OR;

    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience OR:

    • 8 years relevant work experience

  • Electrical Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) experience

  • NFPA 70E training experience

  • Preventative maintenance experience

  • Cable or fiber optic termination experience

  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic actuators

  • Prior Military Experience

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds

  • Continuous walking / standing

  • Must be able to climb a ladder and work at heights up to 10 feet

  • Ability to speak, hear and understand speech

  • Good vision and hand dexterity

  • Will be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects

Other Information:

  • This is an onsite position

  • Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm

  • Selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $67800 - $90050 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
