Cryogenic Controls & Instrumentation Engineering Lead
Job ID JR101599 Date posted 12/31/2024Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
Using a mix of custom hardware and software, PLC-based control, and commercial off-the-shelf equipment, the Cryogenics Controls & Instrumentation (C&I) group is responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining controls and instrumentation systems used for the central helium plant, 4K distribution systems, 2K satellite and distribution systems for the EIC project. Besides new systems for the EIC project, the group is also responsible for upgrades to the existing central plant main PLC and SCADA system, upgrades to the existing SRF test facility cryogenic controls system, and upgrades to the exiting AGS superconducting snake magnet controls system.
