Electrical Engineer - Cable and Safety

Job ID JR101325 Date posted 07/30/2024

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

BNL’s Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) directorate seeks a Cable Tray & Electrical Safety Engineer to work with other electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical system designers, and technicians developing, designing, procuring, and installing cable distribution systems and electrically powered systems for the EIC.  The EIC Rapid Cycling Synchrotron, Electron Storage Ring, and Hadron Ring, use high current electromagnets that run in DC mode, ramped mode, and fast pulsed mode with various power supply types and cable types, both high and low voltage.  There are also specialized cables for beam instrumentation and RF.  These cables will be located in the EIC tunnel and service buildings installed on cable trays and in underground conduit.  This engineer will also work closely with safety personnel to be sure all NEC codes are strictly enforced and all job planning processes are completed before any job begins.  This engineer will also provide design support for specifying proper cable type, cable placement, cable tray configuration, cable thermal calculations, and electronic rack design and proper cooling.  We seek an individual with a background in the NEC code, electrical safety regulations and practices, cable distribution systems, and electrical racks and components that apply to an industrial complex.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Define requirements and implement grounding, power, cable tray, conduit and lighting.

  • Design cable tray and conduit systems for electrical cables, raceways, and insulated conductors used for electric power distribution, control, signal instrumentation, and communication.

  • Specify cable placement in the tray taking into consideration cable bend radius and cable temperature considerations, and how the cables shall be spaced in the trays and in the conduits from tunnel to outside.

  • Determine if cables shall be passively air cooled, especially in vertically stacked cable trays.

  • Perform as one of the EIC electrical inspectors for new equipment and support electrical safety related to rack mounted and standalone electrical equipment.

  • Work with other electrical engineers and electricians developing, designing, and installing cable trays for the EIC.

  • Procure and order required cable tray and conduit.

  • Contract work with electricians to complete work.

  • Supervise removals of existing unused RHIC Power Supply cables.

  • Coordinate with other engineers on penetrations between the tunnel and equipment houses.

  • Participate in safety reviews of the cable tray system.

  • Provide status reports on these projects through to completion.

  • Lead job planning for all electrical work ensuring execution in accordance with BNL and EIC ES&H policy and procedures. Share work effort time between work planning and safety paperwork and cable tray efforts.

  • Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, and respect for all.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related discipline

  • At least seven (7) years of relevant technical experience that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of cable tray systems, electronics and systems

  • Working knowledge of NEC Code Article 392

  • Working knowledge of NEMA VE-1

  • Experience with cable systems in various environments (including indoors and outdoors)

  • Experience managing a large-scale cable design and installation project

  • Demonstrated ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals

  • Excellent written and oral skills and proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project),

  • Demonstrated experience organizing and presenting technical review and status reports

  • Experience with work planning and safety in a highly regulated environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or physics

  • Knowledge of cable requirements and experience in preparing specifications for cable procurements

  • Experience in the procurement of cables for a large complex

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Will be required to climb ladders to varied heights

  • May be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker

  • May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects

Other Information:

  • Valid drivers’ license is required

  • Some travel may be required
