ASSOCIATE STAFF ENGINEER

The mission of the Instrumentation Department is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.

The Instrumentation Department (IO) seeks an individual for a graduate student researcher position in Cryogenic Characterization of Integrated Circuits to conduct R&D work in design and characterization of extreme temperature range devices.  This work feeds into ongoing projects related to instrumentation and infrastructure for quantum computing.  We invite eligible applicants for this position with the possibility to extend as needed by the project. This position is an on-site position, no remote employment possible. The ideal candidate will be required to put in assembly of the test setup and practice design of a portion of hardware proving implementation of cryogenic RF and data conversion circuits.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

 - Operate and perform test of RF and data conversion integrated circuits using a closed-loop helium cryo-cooler

 - Develop and maintain an automated characterization testbed for RF and data conversion circuits at deep cryogenic conditions

 - Work with the broader Instrumentation Department personnel on testing and characterization of devices and circuit components

 - Contribute to design of ASIC within the scope of cryogenic operation

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study. - Knowledge of ASIC design process and flows

 - Familiarity with PDKs and CAD/EDA tools for ASIC design

 - Familiarity with measurement automation using but not limited to Python, MATLAB, VISA, and GPIB/LXI/PXI protocols

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 -  A graduate degree an electrical engineering or closely related field of study

 - Research interest in mixed-signal CMOS circuit design for extreme temperatures

 - Ability to advise other team members on design strategies and techniques for extreme temperature operation
