The BNL Isotope Group, which is part of the Medical Isotope Research and Production Program (MIRP), has an opening for an Assistant Scientist to aide in targetry development, isotope separations, radioanalytical techniques, evaluation, and development of new radioisotopes, and expanding the program into new areas. The Assistant Scientist will also participate in a DOE-sponsored program on radioisotope research and production with accelerator beams. We are seeking outstanding candidates in radiochemistry or nuclear chemistry to perform laboratory research involving the production and purification of accelerator formed radioisotopes. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

The main program focus is to produce and distribute radioisotopes for nuclear medicine research and clinical practice, and to develop radioisotopes for new applications in medicine and science. The group’s major facilities include the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), and a fully equipped hot laboratory with hot cells, radiochemistry research laboratories, and analytical equipment. The BLIP utilizes high intensity proton beams of up to 200 MeV. The MIRP program resides in the Collider-Accelerator Department.

  • Present scientific oral presentations and discussions
  • Prepare reports on scientific work and manuscripts
  • Study and analyze the physical properties and nature of isotopes
  • Conduct research and/or studies that contribute to critical isotope production
  • Develop new and enhance existing scientific methods and procedures to test and create isotopes in conjunction with scientific objectives
  • Research of physical singularities and drawing a hypothesis for testing
  • Design and execute scientific experiments to affirm or disprove proposed new hypotheses related to the creation of critical isotopes, document results
  • Design and conduct experiments to ensure that laboratory results are transferable to standard production capabilities and operations
  • Provide fellow scientists and other staff members with scientific and technical expertise
