Assistant Accountant

The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success.  Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven’s Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices.  The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab’s fiscal matters and its approximately $800 million annual budget.

The function of the Fiscal Services Division (FSD) is to support the mission critical research of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). FSD provides Payroll, Accounts Payable, General Accounting, Financial Reporting and Travel Services support to the Laboratory.

The Assistant Accountant position reports to the General Accounting Manager and will be given a wide range of accounting related tasks. The ideal candidate will have some accounting knowledge/background/education and the ability to learn new things and be able to multi-task, be deadline driven, detail oriented, ability to work on a team, and someone who wants to grow within the organization. It is a great opportunity to develop skills and advance within a financial area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the general accounting area – assisting with journal vouchers, preparation of account reconciliations, miscellaneous payments, audit requests, and obtaining 1099 support

  • Provide superior customer service skills by being responsive to customer requests which include vendor and departmental inquiries

  • Act as the backup for the Accounts Payable function – ensuring that invoices are entered, checks are run timely and accurately and working with the departments where necessary

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A BS degree in Accounting, Finance or Business; or equivalent full-time, directly related experience on the basis of 2:1 (experience: college) years

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, and Word

  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within tight time constraints

  • Must undergo and receive a favorable disposition in a preliminary background investigation (criminal, credit, 
    prior employment, etc.)

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity or working knowledge of PeopleSoft or similar ERP system

  • PeopleSoft query experience

  • Experience working in an accounting department

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • The ability to work at a computer for most of the day

  • Requires the ability to concentrate on accuracy

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $67,250 - $97,500 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
