The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Position Description
The Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) has an opening for a Water Systems Group (WSG) Supervisor within the Experimental Support & Facilities Division (ES&F). The Water Systems Group is responsible for the operations, maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting and construction of cooling water/compressed air systems in support of C-AD experiments throughout the laboratory. Systems include, but are not limited to, water/air cooled chillers, cooling towers, open/closed loop piping systems, heat exchangers, pumping systems, de-ionized water systems, electronics/magnet cooling water systems, electronic programming and logic controls, instrumentation air/pneumatic controls systems, etc. The primary role for this position is to supervise the C-AD Water Systems Group Technicians and work directly with other Technical Groups/Supporting Engineers within the ES&F Division. This position has a high level of interaction with various Divisions within C-AD that include an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directly supervise and provide supporting resources for the WSG. This includes directing the work of highly skilled technicians in such areas as construction, maintenance, operation or development of specialized scientific equipment or facilities
- Work controls coordination, scheduling, project planning, training and oversight of large complex technical projects to meet ES&F goals and safety requirements
- Ensure that work policies and procedures are followed
- Serve as Primary Authorized Employee on performing Lockout/Tagout to secure systems electrically and mechanically for technicians to work on safely
- Respond to and direct technical staff to operations emergency calls/alarms
- Perform pre-job briefings to familiarize technical groups of jobs and identify work control hazards
- Coordinate work with other technical group supervisors and scientific groups
- Material and equipment ordering in support of all work associated with the group
- Responsible for equipment and systems asset management for the group
- Manage all C-AD cooling tower systems to meet New York State sanitary requirement and coordinate with Facilities & Operations Directorate/Energy & Utility Division
Position Requirements
- Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field or considerable technical and job-relevant training, and ten (10) years related experience in a broad technical field which includes demonstrated technical leadership and supervisory experience
- Ability to interpret design drawings, water/air flow schematics and piping & instrumentation diagrams
- Knowledge of open and closed loop pumping systems related to hydronic cooling systems
- Ability to adapt to evolving circumstances, operate successfully in a rigorously regulated environment, and manage multiple competing priorities
- Ability to positively interact with internal and external customers, contractors, vendors and skilled trades
- Clear and concise written and oral communication skills
- Must have working knowledge of computers and software applications such as Microsoft Office
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of AutoCad
- Ability to perform/understand hydronics piping, controls and pump design
- Experience with Programmable Logic Control (PLC) systems
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Ability to carry weights up to 30 lbs
- Ability to work at heights and climb a ladder
- Ability to walk along sloped terrain and uneven surfaces
- May stand for long periods of time
