Organizational Overview
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) has an opening for a Water Systems Group (WSG) PLC Controls Technician within the Experimental Support & Facilities Division (ES&F).  The Water Systems Group is responsible for the operations, maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, controls programming and construction of cooling water/compressed air systems in support of C-AD experiments throughout the laboratory.  Systems include, but are not limited to, water/air cooled chillers, cooling towers, open/closed loop piping systems, heat exchangers, pumping systems, de-ionized water systems, electronics/magnet cooling water systems, electrical and electronic controls including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), instrumentation air/pneumatic controls systems.This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate, repair, maintain, assemble, and program control systems for the air and water systems and associated sub systems for the C-AD water systems group
  • Assemble control chassis using electrical wiring and mechanical fabrication techniques
  • Manage upgrades to existing control systems to address newest software packages and hardware upgrades
  • Be available for emergency call-ins for all utilities system repairs, trips, or system related situations
  • Work safely and follow all applicable procedures and policies

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or technical field
  • At least six (6) years of full-time relevant work experience
  • Familiar with open and closed loop constant/variable speed pumping systems
  • Proficiency in the use of standard test and measurement equipment, flow meters, pressure gauges, multimeters, etc.
  • The ability to work accurately from drawings and schematics including verbal instructions
  • Soldering and basic plumbing skills
  • Experience with machine shop equipment and practices
  • Experience in the safe use of power hand tools
  • Basic electronic and industrial electrical skills
  • Experience in the field of pressure, temperature, level and flow instrumentation including programmable logic controller (PLC) based systems
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work under minimum supervision
  • Basic computer operating skills (MS Office Suite), including Excel and Word

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with Allen Bradley control systems and Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and software
  • Advanced basic programming skills
  • The ability to interface different equipment manufacturers controls through electronics and software
  • Pneumatic control experience

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders and lift up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to work in an area that emits radiation within safety parameters

  • Valid US driver’s license and the ability to drive laboratory vehicles
  • Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
