Job ID 2638 Date posted 05/03/2021

Brookhaven National Laboratory ( delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators rings, one producing an intense beam of electrons traveling clockwise, and the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei traveling counter-clockwise which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

We seek an Electrical Engineer to join our Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Infrastructure Division.  The mission of the Infrastructure Division isto support the physics, engineering and technical groups tasked with the design of the new electron-ion collider.  You will be involved in the design and development of new buildings to house scientific equipment, roadways, and all utilities required for the EIC.

Join the BNL EIC team and be part of building the next discovery machine for science!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in design and design reviews for large-scale electrical facilities including medium voltage electrical power transmission and distribution systems (e.g. 69 to 13.8kV, 20MVA main transformers; 15kV overhead lines, 15kV pad mount switches, and underground feeders)
  • Participate in design and design reviews for conventional building facilities (e.g.   low voltage electrical power distribution systems, standby generators, motor control centers, distribution boards, underground 600V wiring and cable tray systems)
  • Provide AutoCad assistance to develop sketches of talking points, design suggestions, one-line diagrams, and site maps.
  • Provide calculations to verify design is compliant with codes and standards.
  • Monitor construction activities, looking for compliance with contract drawings, possible interferences, and overall safety on the construction site.
  • Perform contract administration duties including:  responses to Requests for Information (RFI’s), scheduling, cost reporting, and estimates for contract change requests/orders.
