Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Center for Data Driven Discovery (C3D - https://www.bnl.gov/compsci/c3d/ ) part of the Computational Science Initiative (CSI - https://www.bnl.gov/compsci/ ) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary center for the development, deployment, and operation of data-intensive discovery services for science, national security, and industry. Its mission is to translate the advances in computer science and applied mathematics research into algorithms, tools and services that deliver measurable improvements to the scientific discovery process. C3D’s philosophy is hereby to build close, ongoing collaborations between domain science experts, computational scientists, applied mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers. These expert teams jointly identify and address critical data analysis and management challenges within BNL’s key science mission areas and for its external client base. Next to access to expertize from within the Computational Science Initiative and extensive in-house domain science expertise, the C3D collaborators have also access to the research and operational computing and data storage capabilities provided by the BNL Scientific Data and Computing Center.
C3D is currently looking for two Software Engineers with core Data Science skills that enjoy working in a collaborative environment with leading researchers to create novel data service solutions. Existing collaborative efforts are focused around key Department of Energy Scientific Research Facilities, such as the National Synchrotron Light Source II, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the Systems Biology Knowledgebase. Growth areas include climate data assimilation and analysis, as well as national security.
- Conduct research and development of new data management and/or analysis methods and services.
- Collaborate extensively with domain scientists to identify, implement and evaluate data analysis services.
- Extensively promote the research results through scholarly publications and presentations at leading conferences.
- Successfully attract future research funds through participation in and leadership of research proposals.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- BS in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or Bioinformatics
Demonstrable Experience (a minimum of 5 years) in Data Science techniques is required, specifically – data analysis, data quality, service oriented design, testing, user support, bioinformatics
- Knowledge of Python, Java and shell scripting, working knowledge of Perl and C/C++
