Senior Electronics Technician

Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The CAD Department has an opening for an Electronic Technician to support the engineering staff with performing reviews of old and new designs of electronic and electrical equipment belonging to the Collider Electrical Power Supply (CEPS) Group at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. Reviews will include design performance, installation components to manufacturer specifications, parts availability, and servicing issues. The candidate will conduct PC board assembly, evaluation and testing, design test fixtures for all PC boards and work with the design room to make new PC boards.  This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review schematics and assembly drawings for design errors for the CEPS group at the RHIC facility
  • Review component specifications and select parts conforming to design requirements
  • For prototype boards, use of commercial pc board software program to produce new PC boards
  • Mark up prints for submission to design group for modifications as necessary
  • Design and build test fixtures for testing equipment for the CEPS group
  • Write test procedures for use in testing new subassemblies
  • As team leader, provide technical details to work groups as necessary to complete complex electronic related tasks (installations, testing, troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Learn how to use the Windchill drawing storage system to retrieve drawings, submit work requests, submit ECRs and review drawings
  • Provide technical details to PC board designers to correct the artwork of existing pc boards and design new pc boards

Position Requirements

  • Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field, plus extensive job-relevant training
  • Ten (10) years of full time in-depth related experience in a broad technical field
  • Experience documenting pc board problems and corrections
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and network analyzers
  • Design, testing and troubleshooting on complex electronic equipment
  • Available for call in’s during equipment failures
  • Advanced knowledge of electronics
  • The ability to work from drawings, schematics and verbal instructions 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with electrolytic capacitor conditioning

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and handle electronic equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Good color and depth perception
  • Ability to perform tasks in a radiation and high noise areas of the RHIC facility
