Organizational Overview

The Interdisciplinary Science (IS) Department is performing research in the areas of electric grid modernization and grid integration of renewable energy generation. A goal of our research is to contribute to the development of the next-generation Smart Grid, including the application of innovative Smart Grid technologies that could enhance the performance, reliability, and resilience of the electric grid.

Position Description

The selected candidate will perform research in the areas of electric grid modernization and the application of smart grid sensors for improving grid performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform research on power system dynamics and control theory applications under high inverter-based resources (IBRs)
  • Develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) techniques for the assessment of dynamics of large, interconnected grids, optimization, and cybersecurity
  • Perform modeling of electrical networks with integrated IBRs

Position Requirements

  • PhD. in Electrical Engineering or related field with at least two years of experience beyond PhD
  • Experience with applications of control theory and mathematical programming for power system stabilization and optimization
  • Experience with AI/ML applications in dynamic assessment, optimization, and control of power systems
  • Experience with modeling of power grids with high IBRs
  • Experience with hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulators such as RTDS and OPAL-R
  • Skills and experience with programming languages such as Matlab and Python for power system applications
  • Demonstrated communication skills and success and experience in executing sponsor-funded research programs

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of strategies to address challenges specific to the integration of renewable resources into large-scale systems, such as planning and operational tools development by leveraging the power of AI/ML techniques.
