The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV.  This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.


The Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) has an opening for an experienced RF systems engineer to lead and manage the C-AD RF Group through the remainder of the RHIC program and to collaborate on and support the design, construction, and operation of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).  The RF group also supports the RHIC injector chain operations for high intensity protons, polarized protons, and heavy ions from 200 MeV LINAC to the AGS.  The group actively supports the operation of the BNL isotope production facility, the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), and future planned beam facilities for the C-AD LINAC, AGS, and Booster.  The group also provides support for the C-AD Superconducting RF test facility and the upgrade of that facility.  The RF Group leader manages a team that includes Scientist, Engineers, and Technicians, and coordinates efforts with other groups in the C-AD complex as well as the EIC. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Accelerator Physicists and CAD Managers to support various experimental beam programs, develop and define the scope for all RHIC RF systems as well as pre-injectors, including specification for CAD RF system performance

  • Coordinate with other groups to ensure efficient and accurate communication of RF system parameters and requirements which impact their scope

  • Detail the infrastructure and installation requirements necessary to support the operation of RF systems

  • Execute the defined RF systems commissioning

  • Assign and supervise the work of RF group members and ensure that they have the necessary qualifications, skills, experience, and resources to deliver the RF scope and carry out all work safely and professionally

  • Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, and respect for all

  • Provide performance feedback through formal performance appraisals for all direct reports.

  • Assign tasks to group engineers and technicians to support the safe and successful operation of all RF systems in CAD, including Linac, Booster, AGS, and RHIC

  • Lead and support all RF systems upgrades

  • Lead and support all new C-AD’s projects


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • B.S in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer science or closely related field

  • At least 10 years of relevant full-time progressively responsible technical experience as well as experience in managing personnel

  • Broad knowledge of accelerator RF systems, RF and Microwave Engineering, Normal Conducting RF cavities, high power RF amplifiers and transmission systems, control of high-power RF systems, machine, and personnel safety

  • Expert level knowledge and at least 10 years of experience designing high performance digital Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) controllers used on a modern accelerator complex to control sets of very diverse RF systems

  • Extensive experience implementing LLRF control algorithms solutions to solve problem in a muti-machine accelerators complex, including machine to machine synchronization, beam control feedback loops, high gain digital/analog cavity field control feedback loops and cavity resonance control feedback loops utilizing fast tuner including ferrite and piezo tuners

  • Experience in an accelerator environment working with scientists, engineers, and technicians to overcome complex and multifaceted technical challenges and deliver systems which perform as promised

  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate with other technical groups to achieve overall project objectives

  • Experience with RF measurement equipment: Network Analyzer, TDR, Spectrum Analyzer, Phase Noise analyzers et al.

  • Clear and concise written and oral communication skills

  • Proficiency with standard MS Office tools including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Experience in developing project schedule, tracking progress and completing projects on time and on budget

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field

  • Fifteen plus (15+) years progressively responsible related work experience including demonstrated outstanding abilities in engineering leadership

  • Knowledge of accelerator physics and beam-cavity interactions

  • Knowledge and experience with superconducting RF systems

  • Familiarity with heavily beam loaded RF systems

  • Knowledge of High-Power Vacuum Tubes

  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art high performance SRF systems

  • Experience in hardware/software integration in complex systems

  • Experience with VHDL or other hardware definition language at the expert level

  • Experience programming in C/C++ languages

  • Experience working with embedded systems

  • Experience with technical software: Matlab/Simulink, MathCad, CST Studio Suite, AutoCad, etc.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Hand /Eye coordination

  • Moderate lifting (up to 20 lbs.)


  • Candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on breadth and depth of knowledge

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Driver License

  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $122450 - $224250 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
