The Physics Department seeks a research associate in the Nuclear Theory Group. In this role the selected candidate will work under the direction of Peter Petreczky, Group Leader of the Nuclear Theory Group to conduct research in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform research in QCD theory phenomenology supporting the science program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the future Electron-Ion Collider
  • Organize and participate in seminars, meetings and workshops
  • Publish research results and conduct presentations at meetings and conferences

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD degree in Theoretical Nuclear or Elementary Particle Physics
  • Prior research experience in high energy nuclear physics
  • Ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations, as well as write articles in scientific journals
  • Clear and concise verbal/written/presentation communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of small-x physics and gluon saturation

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
  • Candidates must have completed all degree requirements by the commencement of employment.
  • Initial two (2) year term appointment subject to one (1) year option renewal contingent on funding and performance.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $76700 - 79550 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
  • May require domestic and international travel.
