Organizational Overview

The postdoctoral associate will be a member of the Catalysis: Structure and Reactivity (CRS) Group, which usually involves 20-25 scientists (five permanent PIs, plus postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and visiting scientists) doing research with well-defined model surfaces and powder catalysts, using state-of-the-art characterization techniques (STM, XPS, IR, XRD, XFAS, PDF) and theoretical methods (DFT, KMC, AI/ML).

Position Description

The postdoctoral research associate will perform studies to unravel the fundamental science behind the selective catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide and methane to high value chemicals or fuels. The studies will be part of a project aimed at catalyst characterization and mechanistic studies linked to C1 chemistry (CO2 hydrogenation, the water-gas shift reaction and methane activation and conversion). Experiments will be carried out with metals, oxides and metal-oxide interfaces, mainly using non-expensive components that can be scaled-up to industrial operations. The chemical behavior of well-defined surfaces and powders will be investigated using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS), and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Parallel to the regular in-lab studies, we will be investigating the surface chemistry of C1 processes using several synchrotron-based techniques.

Position Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral research associate will investigate basic aspects in the chemistry associated with the conversion of CO2 and methane on metal-oxide interfaces. He/she will be in charge of XPS and IRAS instruments constantly used in the Catalysis: Structure and Reactivity Group

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Due to the nature of the experiments, the new research associate must have a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics with extensive experience in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and/or infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Candidate should have a good knowledge of the surface chemistry of metals, oxides and metal-oxide interfaces. Previous work at synchrotron research facilities using AP-XPS and NEXAFS would be useful for future studies.

BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
