Research Associate for Synchrotron Assessment of Environmental Samples

Job ID 1974 Date posted 12/10/2019

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The Nonproliferation and National Security Department (NN) contributes to U.S. nuclear security and safeguards efforts by assisting in the development, analysis and assessment of policies that strengthen international regimes, collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and threats to the U.S. and international communities, developing and implementing new technologies to address existing and emerging threats, and strengthening the domestic and international institutions that form the framework of the nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security regimes through training and engagement.

Within NN, the Detector Systems R&D and Applications Group, provides radiological assistance to federal and state agencies under the DOE Radiological Assistance Program, technical assistance to the Department of Homeland Security, support to the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Nuclear Compliance Verification, and analyses and protection recommendations for events involving radiation dispersal devices.

The Nonproliferation and National Security Department has an opening for a Post Doc to assist with the application of existing tools and techniques developed for use at synchrotron radiation facilities, the analysis of environmental samples and, specifically, to determine 1) how synchrotron radiation-derived chemical/elemental analysis of actinide particles compares with electron microscopy analysis of the same or similarly prepared particles, 2) the performance metrics for synchrotron particle analysis, and 3) how the developed methods will perform on samples with large numbers of particles.  Synchrotron radiation experiments will be performed at the SRX beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This is a one-year term appointment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for and conduct experiments at National Synchrotron Light Source II
  • Modify or develop software as needed to analyze data and develop procedures
  • Prepare presentations, posters and papers for project reviews and professional society meetings, quarterly and annual project reports to sponsors, and publications based on the results of the project

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, physics, or chemistry
  • Experience in computational methods.
  • Experience in experimental methods
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with the Python software code

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of international nuclear safeguards
  • Knowledge of international safeguards technology and approaches
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
  • Knowledge of techniques used in synchrotron radiation research
  • Familiarity with R software code

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • This position will involve work conducted at the National Synchrotron Light Source II and, in particular, setting up and monitoring equipment and samples at the SRX beamline. To be effective, the candidate must be able to lift 30 pounds, maneuver in and around the beamline, and work in cramped spaces.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • The regular work day will be 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, but irregular hours are likely based on the availability of the SRX beamline.  The SRX beamline operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  The project will make use of time on the beamline as it becomes available, which could be outside of regular work hours, between 5pm and 8am, or on weekends.
